AKwan’s Kitchen: How To Make Apple Pie

Happy 2012 from ABCcubed! To start the new year off right, we bring you an all-new episode of AKwan’s Kitchen! In the Season 3 premiere, we are welcoming the year 2012 by making an All-American Classic–the apple pie! Thanks to our guest stars, Lily Chan and Jamie Soong, for making special appearances!

Outtakes and behind-the-scenes video after the jump.

Outtakes and behind-the-scenes:

– 2 1/2 cups flour
– 1 cup sugar
– 3 apples (+1 Asian pear, that’s what we used; don’t ask why)
– 1 tsp cinnamon
– pinch of salt
– oil or shortening
– pie crust (we used 2 9″ crusts for this recipe)

0.) Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.

Making the dough for the lattices to cover the pie
1.) Mix dry ingredients (flour, sugar, salt) in bowl with oil/shortening. Add in some water if mixture gets too dry.
2.) Roll dough flat with rolling pin. Make sure to flour up the rolling surface.
3.) Cut flattened dough in about 2″ wide strips.

Prepare apples
1.) Wash, peel, and core apples (and pear).
2.) Cut apples into medium slices.
4.) Coat apples with some flour, sugar, and cinnamon. Mix and stir.
5.) Heat apples in a saucepan for not more than 10 minutes to caramelize.
6.) Fill pie crusts with apples.
7.) Sprinkle some more cinnamon over them.

Finish and bake
1.) Weave each strip over the top of apples in a criss-cross pattern.
2.) Use a fork to flatten the edges.
3.) Bake in oven for 30-35 minutes (or until golden-brown or fully cooked).

When done, take out of oven and let them cool on cooling racks before cutting and serving to your guests. And then, they will get to enjoy some homemade apple pie! Mmm nom nom nom!

Good luck!
