Nom Nom Nom – Review: Grasshopper

So for this week’s review, I decided to try something different. For some reason or rather, recently I had this sudden urge to eat something spicy and for tofu. So one day during lunch, since it was such a nice day outside weather-wise (temps in the 70s with low humidity), I decided to take a walk up the street from my work… to Grasshopper — an Asian Vegan place — in hopes to satisfy my craving!

Grasshopper Vegetarian Restaurant

Having not been here before (or many vegetarian restaurants for that matter), I didn’t know what to expect nor what to order. As soon as I walked into the place, I noticed the place was completely empty. I remembered thinking to myself, “Hmm am I early and beat the lunchtime crowd or something? Or did this place open shop for the day just now?” I was probably right on both fronts as I later checked their business hours and they usually open at 11am and it was about 12 noon right now. Anyways… when I got in, the waiter greeted me and I told him I just wanted to look at the menu to order some takeout. ([Tangent:] An interesting tidbit I observed was this place had a front desk but yet there was also a “back desk” at which the ordering and paying for food was actually done [End Tangent]) So with the menu in hand now and wanting some tofu, I went directly to the tofu section. Hmm nothing interested me there at this particular moment… So next I jumped down to the Lunch Specials section. Looking at the menu again on their website now, I don’t see the dish I had ordered on there. But anyways, I had ordered the tofu with 3 kinds of mushrooms dish (with white rice); since this was a Lunch Special, it came with a soup, so I had picked miso soup.

Mmm mushrooms and tofu... omnomnomnomnom

The actual dish wasn’t bad, not bad at all… in fact, it was really good. I had asked the waiter if it was spicy and he said it was “meh not really; spicy enough” so I told him to make it spicy but not too spicy yet not “mild” either. Later, I found that the dish wasn’t really spicy at all. Anyways, the dish was really as advertised: it was basically tofu with 3 kinds of mushrooms, all topped with some kind of sauce and white rice on the side. Whatever sauce it was, it was good. The soup wasn’t bad either. Well, it is miso soup after all. Hmm I think I’ll have to come back here more often for lunch and try something else next time.

Money: $$ (out of 4)

Good date place? Sure why not? If your date is vegetarian or likes vegetarian food…

Grade: B+ (for now, since I only had one dish; I don’t want to give a higher grade until I try more of their selections)

Would I return? (Yay or nay): Yay. It is literally only just down the street from where I work after all.
